PRESS RELEASE
FROM: THE NEW PROVINCETOWN PLAYERS
SPRING PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL
Provincetown
Two popular local playwrights are among six winners of the short play competition in the New Provincetown Players’ Spring Playwrights’ Festival 2008.
Meryl Cohn, well known for her annual Women’s Week comedies is the author of “Show Me Yours”, Three men in a diner who share the distinction of a surprising connection. Jerry Thompson, author of many short plays read and produced by NPP and its predecessor, the Provincetown Theatre Company, has penned “Propositions”, a laugh-filled tale of how the best planned con job can be thrown off track.
Their works will be staged at the Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford Street, on Thursday-Sunday May 29-June 1 on the first weekend of the festival. The second and third weekend, June 5-8 and June 12-15, will be devoted to staging and discussions of acclaimed Cape Cod playwright Wendy Kesselman’s play, “The Notebook”.
Other winning authors in the Competition are:
Joan Lipkin, St. Louis, MO, with “The Date”, showing two guys at the end of a first date wondering what’s next.
George Sauer, Dedham, MA, with “Small Window” a comic portrayal of the unraveling of a culinary scam.
Barbara Lindsay, Seattle, WA with “Canyon’s Edge”, which demonstrates how remorse can be transformed into a healing intervention at the brink of the Grand Canyon.
John Kern, Charlotte, VT, with “Birthday Wishes” A post-mortem birthday celebration reveals how little we may really know about someone close to us.
The winning entries were selected from more than 135 plays from across the country that NPP received in response to a call for submissions last December.
This year’s NPP festival is the recipient of a grant of $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts, to be matched by $20,000 in local funds for which a fundraising effort is now under way.
As guest playwright, Ms. Kesselman will participate in post-performance audience discussions, serve as dramaturge and mentor during the rehearsal and performance of the six short plays, and will conduct a one half day playwriting workshop for the six emerging playwrights whose work was chosen for production. In addition, Ms. Kesselman will conduct a one half day playwriting workshop that is open to the public. The six playwrights will also participate in post-performance discussions with the audience on themes within the plays, and will receive private guidance from Ms. Kesselman on how to improve their playwriting skills for future productions. The staging of “The Notebook” will be a co-production by NPP and the Harwich Junior Theater, which will provide director and cast, while the NPP provides the state-of-the-art venue and other production support. It is expected that a touring company to take performances of “The Notebook” to schools, libraries and other locations throughout Cape Cod will also be developed.
