SPRING AND FALL PLAYWRIGHTS’ FESTIVAL

As an integral part of its mission, the Provincetown Theater Company is committed to fostering the development of new work by established and emerging playwrights with our Spring and Fall Playwrights’ Festivals.

Twice yearly, the Provincetown Theater Company produce readings and memorized performances of new plays by writers from Cape Cod, New England and across the United States and Canada. The festivals also offer workshops in playwriting, acting and directing and often feature panel discussions and audience feedback sessions as part of its schedule.

Now in its tenth year, the festivals continue to reflect Provincetown’s rich heritage as a home for the development of exciting new works of theatrical art. Poised to grow, the company’s goal is to attract visitors and theater professionals from all points north, east, south and west to Provincetown in the off and shoulder seasons.

Thanks for a great 13th Annual Fall Playwrights’ Festival!

We are very pleased to report that this year’s Spring Playwrights’ Festival was a great success! We have many people to thank. “The 6 Plays in Sixty+ Minutes” were a big hit. Several of the winning playwrights attended rehearsals and performances in addition to the workshop conducted by the Festival’s Award Winning dramaturge, Wendy Kesselman. Thank you Wendy! To our hard working actors who performed in the “Six Plays” and the equally talented directors who brought to life the 10 minute plays with skill and style we are very grateful. For the yeoman task of wearing the Producer hat our special thanks to Board Member Judith Partelow. As usual, our members and Board Members volunteered to pitch in with the details and got the job done with style!

“The Notebook” was “truly a beautiful evening of theater” according to our patrons who attended the show over the two weeks it was performed. We thank you for coming! Nina Schuessler directed “The Notebook” in a collaboration between the Harwich Junior Theater and the Provincetown Theater Company. Ms. Schuessler and Ms. Kesselman brought to full-scale life this beautiful play about literature and human relationships. Florence Phillips starred as Miss Thorne and the students, played by Charlie Powicki as Warren and Nicole Blodgett as Jennie, and John McFadden played Mr. Gilman. All parts were skillfully played.

Ms. Kesselman graciously conducted “talk-backs” with the audiences of “The Notebook” and brought information and insight about her play and the play writing process. We are deeply grateful to Wendy Kesselman and to Pulitzer Prize Winning poet Mary Oliver who did TWO benefit readings to help fund the production. The collaboration was a wonderful one – between play writing and poetry – literature and performance – players and audience – performing arts institutions worked together and audiences sat back and enjoyed and appreciated it all!

Last but certainly not least, thanks to the Provincetown Theater Foundation Board; our members and individuals who contributed to help match the NEA Fastrack Grant. Thanks to: The Kelley Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts. Our Sponsors: The Banner, Fanizzi’s, the Mews, the Lobster Pot, LipTV, and the Visitor Services Bureau.

We thank every one involved and look forward in anticipation to next year’s successful Playwrights’ Festival!
